San Damiano d’Asti
San Damiano d’Asti, a charming town between Langhe, Alto Monferrato and Roero, boasts a historic center with the porticoed Via Roma and tree-lined avenues on which to enjoy the view atop the ancient town walls. Local fairs are held throughout the year: in March, for example, there is the St. Joseph’s Fair, in the fall the New Wine Fair (Barbera d’Asti, Cisterna, Nebbiolo, Freisa d’Asti), in November the White Truffle Fair (Fiera dei Santi) and in December the Capon Fair. Every Monday, meanwhile, there is the local market, where you can taste many local delicacies including the town’s typical sweet treats, called ‘sandamianesi’ made with cocoa and hazelnuts. In addition, for those who love sports, just outside the center there are many miles of trails that can be explored by mountain bike or road bike that lead to the neighboring towns and beyond.
GOVONE
Situated among the hills, this small village is a great destination for those who want to discover the history and culture of the area. Highlights include the Royal Castle of Govone, a sumptuous 18th-century Savoy residence set in a large park, and the Church of St. John the Baptist, a 17th-century Baroque church with frescoed and stucco-decorated interiors. Govone is also known as the “Village of Christmas,” and the castle becomes a magical place to visit during the holidays, with its lights, market and activities.
ASTI
Here you can visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, a 12th-century Gothic church with a distinctive rose window on its façade; the Palazzo del Comune, a medieval building that often hosts cultural events; and the Troyana Tower, an imposing medieval tower that offers a splendid panoramic view of the city. One cannot leave Asti without tasting its typical sweet treats, such as amaretti, crunchy almond cookies, and torta di nocciole, a cake made from local hazelnuts that has become a symbol of the town.
LANGHE E ROERO
Among the villages in this area are several must-see stops. Barolo is famous for its wine production and for its imposing medieval castle. La Morra, on the other hand, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Langhe hills and a wide selection of fine restaurants. Neive is renowned for its Barbaresco wine production and distinctive medieval village architecture. Monforte d’Alba is an ancient village with winding streets, stone houses and an imposing castle. Finally, Castiglione Falletto, is home to a watchtower and another magnificent castle.
MONFERRATO
An area full of unique treasures, such as the Underground Cathedrals of Canelli, the picturesque villages of Castelnuovo Calcea and Agliano, and the Big Benches, now-famous art installations that are found in several towns. Don’t miss the opportunity to taste local wines such as Barbera and Asti Spumante, and to visit the Infernot, underground chambers dug to store wine.
